John W. Jones, Ph.D.
John Jones holds a doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Maryland in College Park. He worked for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for 34 years in the areas of food safety and international trade. He left FDA in 2006, retiring from the position of Associate Director for Asia and the Pacific in the Office of the Commissioner. During his early career at FDA, he was a laboratory scientist specializing in analytical methods development for chemical contaminants in foods. Subsequently, he assumed senior management positions at the agency, including those of Strategic Manager for FDA's Pesticide and Chemical Contaminants Program and Associate Director for International Affairs at FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN). He has very broad international experience, having worked in over 30 countries on food safety policy and technical issues. He served on U.S. delegations to the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR) and the World Trade Organization's Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (WTO SPS). As a temporary adviser, he has also assisted the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) on various food safety matters.
