IT Server/Database Specialist
Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN)
Position Summary
Under general supervision, installs, designs, and maintains server hardware and software including databases and security needs within the applicable environment.
Qualifications
REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Six months related experience.
- Commanding knowledge of applicable server operating systems Windows Server and Ubuntu Server for a web-based environment. Preferred knowledge in virtualization with VMware ESXi or Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V.
- General knowledge of SQL database creation, input and retrieval (MySQL, MSSQL, PostgreSQL) General knowledge of web server software Apache2, Tomcat6, and IIS. Server hardware involved in a full server stack implementation with virtualization.
- Recommended basic knowledge of SharePoint installation.
- Skill in configuring and backup of server hardware and software; to analytically design program logic or solve technical problems; in operating supported computers and peripherals. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to work effectively with clients.
RECOMMENDED:
- Associates Degree or higher in related field.
- Two years of applicable information management experience.

Coordinator - Food Risk Analysis Programs
AGNR - Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition
Position Summary
This position will work directly with the Risk Analysis Program Manager to efficiently administer JIFSAN’s food risk analysis programs. The incumbent will coordinate the online and classroom training programs as well as assisting with risk analysis research projects. Duties include management of daily operations and planning to meet long term goals.
Qualifications
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Professional background in science, project management related to economics or other discipline relevant to food safety.
- Demonstrated ability to clearly present ideas, reports, recommendations, both orally and in writing.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and adherence to deadlines
- Ability to perform simple statistical analysis.
- Ability to perform literature reviews.
- Ability to manage and create databases.
PREFERRED:
- Master's Degree

Chemistry Laboratory Instructor
JIFSAN International Food Safety Training Laboratory
Position Summary
JIFSAN, a joint program of the University of Maryland and the U.S. FDA, is seeking a Chemist for its International Food Safety Training Laboratory. The JIFSAN International Food Safety Training Laboratory (IFSTL) is a cooperative venture of the University of Maryland Joint Institute for Food safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN) and Waters Corporation. The mission of the IFSTL is to train domestic and foreign nationals in FDA and other fit-for-purpose food testing protocols involving chemical and microbiological contamination.
The successful candidate will work with the IFSTL Manager to develop training workshops for domestic and foreign nationals to carry out analysis of pesticides, veterinary drug residues, mycotoxins and other contaminants in foods.
The position is a renewable, non-tenure track, 12-month appointment with faculty rank.
Qualifications
Required:
BSc degree in chemistry, food science or related field plus 10 years of industry experience in food analytical laboratory, higher education will be considered equivalent. Full professional proficiency in English, written and spoken.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience performing LC, GC, LC-MS and LC-MS-MS methods, ideally using Waters instrumentation, and be familiar with FDA and USDA testing methods. Teaching experience is desirable but not required. Looking for someone who is a team player but also an independent worker, self-driven and with a demonstrated ability to maintain a chemistry laboratory.
Salary & Benefits
Salary $50,000 - $75,000 and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
