FacilitiesThe Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition is located at 1122 Patapsco Bldg. on the University of Maryland campus and the Liaison Partnership Team is located in the FDA Wiley building located at 5100 Paint Branch Parkway in College Park, Maryland. The location is just nine miles from downtown Washington, D.C., and approximately 30 miles from both Baltimore and Annapolis. JIFSAN is accessible by the METRO subway system and bus routes, as well as the MARC commuter train. FDA facilities available for JIFSAN program/activities include state-of-the-art research laboratories, auditorium, lecture rooms and teaching laboratories. JIFSAN is able to use FDA facilities that include CFSAN’s laboratories located in College Park, MD and the state-of-the-art research complex, containing CFSAN’s MODI and CVM’s MODII facilities, located in Laurel, Maryland. These animal testing facilities in Laurel are in close proximity to the new College Park building. MODI is a small animal research (modified barrier) facility that is FDA-owned and contractor operated consisting of offices, laboratories, and animal husbandry and feed/bedding preparation facilities in a modified barrier (microbiological controlled) environment. MODII is a large animal research complex consisting of offices, laboratories, animal research buildings (environmentally controlled) support facilities, and pastures. MODII includes an aquaculture facility to accommodate a variety of fresh water aquatic species. UM has established three of four planned central instrumentation facilities: the nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy laboratory, the electron microscopy laboratory, and the mass spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy laboratory. The forth, the biological imaging laboratory, is in developmental stages and will be housed in the new biological sciences wing of the Biology/Psychology Building. In each, state-of-the art instrumentation will be operated and maintained by qualified technical personnel. These facilities are augmented by FDA instrumentation and personnel who will have research appointments at the Institute. The UM campus in College Park boasts world-class collections at Hornbake and McKeldin Libraries, as well as the White Memorial, and Engineering and Physical Sciences Libraries. The University of Maryland University College (UMUC) houses spacious conference center facilities that are available to visitors. Researchers also have access to the Internet and World Wide Web via UM’s extensive computer operations. JIFSAN integrates the research programs of the Centers for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and Veterinary Medicine with academia. The National Center for Food Safety and Technology in Chicago, Illinois is another cooperative center in which CFSAN participates. |
