JIFSAN’s Clare Narrod, Research Scientist and Manager for the Risk Analysis Program, served on a panel capacity building at the two-day expert meeting on “Food Safety for Nutrition Security” expert meeting this month.
The meeting was hosted by the Nutrition work stream of the Global Donor Platform for Rural Development, a network where 37 international member organizations who work together towards more effective policy and investment in rural development. The meeting was hosted by the Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ), Germany and took place in Berlin, Germany starting on October 1, 2014. A combination of panels, plenary discussions, and breakout groups filled up the day-and-a-half-long event. Over forty participants, who were either platform members or guests from partner organizations, met to discuss food safety and nutrition issues
Narrod, whose recent research is related to identifying cost-effective aflatoxin reduction measures, gave a presentation on the “Knowledge and Practices of Aflatoxin Control Amongst Rural Farmers and the Role of Capacity Building in Promoting Behavioral Change” during the meeting.
Overall, the “Food Safety for Nutrition Security” meeting provided participants with a better understanding of the impact of consuming levels of aflatoxin over time, identify gaps in knowledge on appropriate solutions for controlling aflatoxin so as to improve food and nutrition security, And ways to prioritise potential innovative and effective strategies for the Platform’s involvement in addressing global food safety and food security concerns in the future..
