The pandemic of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) poses a serious public health risk and has already changed the way we interact with and produce food. There are many questions on potential food safety risks associated with COVID-19 during food production, distribution and consumption although there are no reports at this time of human illness that suggests COVID-19 can be transmitted by food or food packaging. The virus spreads from person-to-person through close contact or respiratory droplets. However, it may be possible for viruses to survive on surfaces and objects, reinforcing the need to observe proper hygiene and food safety practices.
