New Study Published in Water Research

In an exciting new study, JIFSAN researchers, Latin American collaborators, and FDA scientists explored surface water sources in Chile and Brazil, which are essential for agricultural irrigation, and uncovered key insights into water quality. Out of 404 samples collected from rivers, canals, and reservoirs, this metagenomic study discovered that over 50% contained common bacteria like Salmonella and Escherichia coli. They also identified over 1,500 antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes, with Brazilian waters showing higher levels. Stagnant water bodies revealed lower biodiversity. These findings open the door to improving water monitoring, ensuring safer water for agriculture and public health. The study was published in the journal “Water Research” last month.
