2016ilsifellows

The 2016 fellows presented their projects at the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) in Washington, D.C.

Course Work - (4 weeks)

Starting in 2011 JIFSAN began offering a 3-month extended fellowship program.  The program was created in order to build knowledge in the area of food safety risk analysis. The training consists of 4 weeks of course work followed by approximately 8 weeks of project development designed with the fellow in mind.

Since projects are customized based on the candidate’s background, the definition and scope should be predefined and discussed well before the fellow arrives for training.  Identifying a project, defining research goals and project development are the responsibility of the selected candidate.

The candidate is also responsible for travel and accommodations during their stay. If interested please make inquiries to Judy Cooper at jkcooper@umd.edu

Project development - (8 weeks)

The selected candidate will come to JIFSAN with a clearly defined project on which they will focus once the course work has been completed.  The project should be discussed and approved well before the candidate arrives with a pre-selected JIFSAN mentor.  Both the student and the mentor should agree on the project scope and goals. JIFSAN will provide the tools and guidance to aid the candidate in completing the project within the 3 month time frame.

Past Testimonials

"I was so fortunate to participate in the JIFSAN Extended Risk Analysis Fellowship program, a comprehensive and up-to-date training course on the latest trends and practices in food safety risk analysis. The resource speakers unselfishly shared their knowledge and were eager to help us understand every aspect of the training course. Projects were done to incorporate all that we have learned and these were presented at the International Life Science Institute. Now I have a different perspective of risk analysis and its components. The new knowledge gained will help me make better food safety researches and enhance my expertise as a food safety professional. Aside from the technical aspect of the fellowship, the three-month stay at the United States allowed us to build a friendly relationship among the fellows, knowing we can depend on each other during our risk analysis activities back in our respective countries. I highly recommend this training course to food safety professionals!"

"Overall, it is a very comprehensive and well-organized training program, including listening to the lectures by scientists on risk analysis, communicating with the experts or policy makers from the US food safety agencies, visiting the food processing site, participating in conferences on food safety and doing our own risk assessment projects under careful guidance. So the training greatly expanded my view and improved my ability on risk analysis. And I am really impressed by the serious and responsible working attitude of the staffs in JIFSAN."

"It's a wonderful experience, not only because of the summer integrated course I attend, but also all kinds of professional exposure I've joined that arranged by my supervisor Dr. Clare Narrod in JIFSAN. From the course, I got systemic training on risk analysis. And during the training program, I was able to build up a quantitative risk assessment model of Campylobacter in broiler chicken. Very fruitful process for me! My view on risk assessment has been largely widened. And the program will change my whole working career. I did enjoy my stay in JIFSAN and I appreciate all the help I received from people in US FDA and USDA."
