2024 Summer Integrated Program (SIP) Food Safety Risk Analysis Courses

Globally, countries are embracing the use of science/risk-based approaches to improve decision-making aimed at enhancing the safety of food in accordance with the Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement. This has created a need to educate food safety and other public health professionals about the principles of risk analysis and the tools and techniques required to apply this approach.

Intro to Risk Analysis in the Regulatory Process (Core)
July 31, 2024 (1 day)
Price: $550
This course introduces international requirements terminology, concepts, tools, and techniques used in food safety risk analysis and how they fit into countries’ regulatory processes. This one-day course serves as a contextual primer for those interested in or involved with a broad range of risk analysis activities, regardless of application.

Risk Management (Core)
August 1-2, 2024 (2 days)
Price: $1,100
Risk Managers play a crucial role in food safety risk analysis as they are responsible for setting the risk analysis process in motion that leads to analysts identifying, assessing, and choosing how to manage potential risks associated with producing, processing, distributing, and consuming food products. Success in risk management is learning how to weigh policy alternatives and arrive at practical and valuable solutions to problems that are often plagued by uncertainty within the confines of their countries’ regulatory framework. This course is not just for decision-makers but also for those who will be tasked to conduct analyses that decision-makers use to identify ways to best reduce risks.

Qualitative Risk Assessment (Core)
August 5-6, 2024 (2 days)
Price: $1,100
Risk assessors play a crucial role in food safety risk analysis by providing a systematic approach to incorporating the current scientific understanding of a food safety risk and analysis of possible ways to manage that risk in accordance with a country’s regulatory process. Their primary focus is on evaluating potential hazards, assessing their likelihood and severity, and generating information that informs risk management decisions. This course teaches the skills needed to predict the likelihood of harm resulting from exposure to chemical, microbial, and physical agents in the diet and respond to risk managers' questions concerning these areas.

Risk Communication (Core)
August 7-9, 2024 (3 days)
Price: $1,320
Risk Communication is the interactive exchange of information and opinions about hazards and risks, risk- related factors and risk perception. Participants will learn the basics of risk communication as it is practiced globally with applications to food safety.

Intro to FDA-iRISK® and Quantitative Risk Assessment
August 12-16, 2024 (5 days)
Price: $3,000
This course provides participants with the basics of building and understanding quantitative risk assessment models. They will be introduced to @Risk - a Microsoft Excel-based Monte Carlo simulation program, and FDA-iRISK® - a Web-based, comparative risk assessment tool with many built-in functions and automated features allowing users to rapidly conduct fully probabilistic risk assessments. This course will give participants a strong foundation in stochastic processes, probabilistic risk assessment and Monte Carlo simulation. Participants can expect to gain hands-on experience in building and analyzing computer-based probabilistic models and experience some techniques and challenges to expect in presenting their results. Participants should have basic knowledge of probability and statistics and intermediate-level skills in using Microsoft Excel.
