In November 2015, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released the Final Rule for Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption, required by the 2011 FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). This rule establishes science-based standards for the production and harvesting of certain produce, including sprouts.
Information about the Final FSMA Rules can be found here: https://www.fda.gov/food/food-safety-modernization-act-fsma/fsma-rules-guidance-industry.
Information about the Final Rule on Produce Safety can be found here: https://www.fda.gov/Food/GuidanceRegulation/FSMA/ucm334114.htm.
The FSPCA TAN intends to provide a Technical Assistance Network (TAN) whereby technical questions regarding implementation of the requirements of the Produce Safety Rule are answered by Food Safety Research Team Experts (FSRTE). For regulation and policy interpretation questions related to the Produce Safety Rule, please submit your inquiry to the FSMA TAN here.
